Ngannou, from irregular immigrant to champion
Prior to the event, Dazn has released ‘Francis Ngannou, forged in adversity’, a new content that discovers the origins of the African fighter. The Cameroonian had to overcome a childhood marked by poverty and adversity before moving to Europe. In this report, the king of the heavyweights crudely remembers that: “Nothing guaranteed us eating two or three times a day, having clothes or being able to go to school.”
Despite the harshness of his youth, Ngannou recognizes that those experiences helped him build the legend he has become: “Looking back, the childhood I had was necessary. I understood very quickly how life worked. I grew up surrounded by hardships and difficulties, everything was a challenge. I accepted the things that happen in life and moved forward (…) Fighting against others is easy, the hardest fight is the one we have against ourselves.
Thèrése Ngannou, the fighter’s mother, also remembers Francis’ childhood: «At night, when we were together, he always talked about boxing. He told me ‘I’m going to be a famous boxer’. He was talking to me about Mike Tyson and, when he told me those things, I didn’t know what to do. “My family is poor… I couldn’t see or hear him talk like that.”
