New storm on far-right French polemicist Eric Zemmour, who today aimed a high-precision rifle at journalists during a view at Milipol, a security fair. “Now don’t laugh anymore, make your way, step back,” he said with a chuckle, then putting the weapon back on one of the stands of the exhibition in Villepinte, in the Parisian suburb. But his gesture did not cause much laugh, especially since Zemmour, potential candidate for the French presidential elections, he recently said he wanted to “take power” from the media. The rifle was a weapon used by the Raid, the French leather heads.
The video of Zemmour’s gesture, posted on Twitter by the Obs journalist Lucas Burel, immediately went viral, with over 2 million views, and the story is reported by all media. The first to react was Marlene Schiappa, Undersecretary for Citizenship. “It is horrible. Especially after seriously saying that ‘I want to reduce the power of the media’. In a democracy, freedom of the press is not a joke and should never be threatened,” he wrote on Twitter.
“Marlene Schiappa is an imbecile. She is grotesque and ridiculous”, was Zemmour’s response, in keeping with her character. The far-right polemicist has not yet confirmed whether he really intends to run for the presidential elections next spring, but is on the rise in the polls, with an October 6 survey that pointed to him in the ballot against President Emmanuel Macron. In a meeting on Saturday in Beziers he thundered against “the counter-powers that have become powers: justice, the media, minorities”, declaring that he wanted to take their power away.
