The French government plans to cap electricity and gas prices for next year for consumers, as costs rise due to the energy crisis.
Today, Saturday, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said that prices will rise by a maximum of 4% until the end of 2022, adding that no adjustments will be made next year.
He added that this would help reduce pressure on the consumer, although he did not specify further new measures in any detail.
Wholesale prices for electricity reached a record high of more than 1,000 euros per megawatt-hour, compared to about 85 euros per megawatt-hour a year ago.
Gas prices also reached a record high of more than 300 euros per megawatt-hour, in the wake of the crisis in Ukraine.
Many European countries rely heavily on gas from Russia, but Moscow has cut supplies to several countries and significantly reduced them to other countries in response to the sanctions imposed on it by Western countries. This has left many governments scrambling to find alternatives, fearing shortages next winter.
