France The Pacific archipelago of New Caledonia again voted against independence

The independence movement is boycotting the vote over the possible effects of a coronavirus pandemic. The independence movement has threatened not to recognize the result of the vote.

Pacific the archipelago of New Caledonia once again halted independence from France in a referendum over the weekend. According to the final results, more than 96 percent of voters voted against independence.

The archipelago voted for the third time in a referendum on whether it wants to remain part of France. Three referendums are the cancellations of a recent peace agreement aimed at reducing tensions on the islands.

Vote remained low, with just under 44% of those entitled to vote exercising their right to vote.

The reason is probably that the campaigners for independence said they were boycotting the vote because they felt the coronavirus pandemic was preventing a fair vote. Proponents of independence are calling for the vote to be postponed to September.

The independence movement has threatened not to recognize the result of the vote and to appeal to the UN to reject the result.
