“Joeur professionel” instead of pro gamer, “joueur-animateur en direct” instead of streamer, even “jeu video de competition” instead of Esports: the French government has established that its employees can no longer use in speeches and official documents terms English or derived from English when it comes to video games. The decision of the Ministry of culture beyond the Alps stems from what is seen as an excessive presence of English in the world of digital entertainment, and from the desire to preserve the purity of the language. The “guidelines” do not spare any terminology, including those commonly used by all over the world as “cloud”, so much so that cloud gaming will become “jeu video en nuage”, ie video game in the cloud. The Ministry also cited the problem of non-understanding of the terms for non-professionals as the reason for the decision.
