Unions in France held this Tuesday (7) the sixth day since January of strikes and protests against the pension reform proposed by President Emmanuel Macron.
Union entities estimated that around 3.5 million people participated in the more than 200 demonstrations across the country, but the Ministry of the Interior calculated a much smaller number of participants, approximately 1.28 million. In some cities, such as Paris, Nantes and Lyon, there were clashes with the police.
Refineries were blocked by protesters, several schools had no classes and France’s civil aviation authority asked airlines to reduce flights by 20% and 30% respectively at Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports in the Paris region. The operation of regional trains and the metro in the French capital was also affected.
Macron’s proposed reform aims to change the minimum retirement age from 62 to 64 by 2030. Other demonstrations have been scheduled for next Saturday (11).
