France Police were struck with a knife in Cannes, France, survived unscathed thanks to a bulletproof vest

According to a police source, the suspect tried to attack the police sitting in a police car.

The police was struck with a knife in Cannes, France on Monday morning at 6.30 local time. For example, a French newspaper reports about the attack Le Monde as well as news agencies AFP and Reuters.

A police source told French BFM TV that the suspected attacker would have opened the door of a police car in front of the police station and struck a police officer sitting in the driver’s seat with a knife.

The suspected attacker had then attempted to attack another police officer in the car until he was shot by a third police officer. The suspect was seriously injured in the situation.

Based on initial information, it was reported that the attack would have injured police. French Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin said later that police avoided physical injuries thanks to a bulletproof vest.

The scene of the attack near the Cannes police station was investigated on Monday.

Cannes mayor David Lisnard told the morning that events will be clarified.

Police sources said the possibility of terrorism would be investigated in the case, according to AFP. However, the case is being dealt with by a local prosecutor instead of a prosecutor specializing in counter-terrorism. Interior Minister Darman, for his part, said it was too early to guess the motive for the act.

The suspect is an Algerian citizen who had a residence permit in Italy, says Darmanin. He was legally in France and was not on the police watch list in France.
