Abortion in France is legal for up to 14 weeks
The French Parliament has definitively approved a bill extending 12 to 14 weeks the period within which it is legal Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy (IVG). The draft law, which began its parliamentary journey in October 2020, was definitively voted today in the National Assembly with 135 votes in favor47 against and 9 abstentions.
The legislative intervention had been proposed by Albane Gaillot, a former member of Macron’s party, who wrote on Twitter “A beautiful victory for women”. The Minister of Health, Olivier Veran he affirmed that the measure, whose purpose is to improve the right to abortion, is “faithful to the struggle for women’s emancipation”.
Meanwhile, also in Latin America the Colombian constitutional court voted for legalize abortion up to the 24th week of pregnancy. Colombia is, in chronological order, the last country in Latin America to expand access to termination of pregnancy. The court’s decision, made up of nine judges, did not meet the expectations of pro-choice groups aiming for the total decriminalization of abortion in Colombia.
However, it is a historical event, as claimed by women’s rights groups, which estimate 400,000 women undergo clandestine abortions in the country every year. Now women in Colombia will be able to abort until the 24th week of pregnancy without having to provide any justification, but after this period abortion will still be subject to restrictions.
