The French Ministry of the Interior has announced the number of refugees who arrived in the country from Ukraine after the start of Russia’s operation to protect Donbass. On March 11, the newspaper reports Ouest-France.
“10,077 people have been under the control of border police officers in the country since February 25,” the publication quotes the words of the Acting Minister Delegate for Citizenship in the Government of France Marlene Schiappa, Acting Minister Delegate for Citizenship in the Government of France.
A day earlier, it was reported that about 7.5 thousand Ukrainian refugees arrived in France, but their number soon increased sharply.
According to the country’s Minister of the Interior Gerald Darmanin, about 2,000 refugees from Ukraine have arrived in France over the past few days. Most of them travel to Paris and the Île-de-France metropolitan region. It was also noted that while the country can accept no more than 25 thousand people.
As the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on March 6, in total, more than 1.2 million refugees have arrived in the territory of the EU countries since the start of the military operation in Ukraine. Most of the refugees are in border countries, including Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and Moldova. So, in Poland alone there are over 1 million of them.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, the authorities of Great Britain and the United States also declared their readiness to accept refugees.
Citizens of Ukraine began to leave the country after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of an operation to protect Donbass on February 24. A few days earlier, the situation in the region escalated due to shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The authorities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of residents and turned to Moscow for help.
Kyiv, in turn, severed diplomatic relations with Moscow and introduced martial law on the territory of the country.
Since 2014, the Ukrainian authorities have been conducting an operation against the residents of Donbass, who refused to recognize the new government.
