French President Emmanuel Macron
France: Macron proposes a ‘deal’ with those who say no to extremes
French President Emmanuel Macron asked for people’s support “able to say no to extremes” in the early elections called after the defeat in the European polls. “I hope that when the time comes, men and women of good will who have been able to say no to extremes will unite, will put themselves in a position to build a shared, sincere, useful project for the country”, he said in the press conference in Paris.
“I hope that the current presidential majority has its leaders capable of dialogue with forces and personalities that are not part of it today”, added the head of state. According to Macron, extreme blocs, whether far-right or far-left, represent “a risk of impoverishment for the country”.
France, Macron: Ciotti has turned his back on the De Gaulle legacy
Macron declared that “since Sunday evening”, after the outcome of the European elections, and since his announcement of the dissolution of the National Assembly “the masks have fallen”, thus criticizing the “unnatural alliances” between the parties, both on the right and on left. “The Republican right, at least the one in power, has just forged an alliance with the far right for the first time, and I mean the far right when I talk about Rassemblement National,” declared the head of state, adding that Eric Ciotti “turned his back in a few hours on the legacy of General de Gaulle, Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy”. “The Republican left and its leaders, who had apparently expressed clear choices during this European campaign, simply allied themselves with the far left which, during the same campaign, was guilty of anti-Semitism, of anti-parliamentarism,” Macron added. For the president, the next legislative elections will be “a test of the truth between those who choose to make their interests prosper and those who want France to prosper”.
France: Macron, government action blocked by parliament
French President Emmanuel Macron “took note of a block in parliament which inevitably prevented government action”: the head of the Elysée explained with this, as well as with the result in the European elections, his choice to dissolve the National Assembly and reconvene new legislative elections for 30 June. The relative majority of the president’s allies “unfortunately did not allow us to build a lasting coalition”, he noted.
France, Ciotti orders the closure of the Républicains headquarters
The situation in Paris at the headquarters of the Républicain risks degeneratings, whose main leaders disagree with President Eric Ciotti’s electoral agreement with Marine Le Pen’s party. After refusing to participate in the political office that could remove him, Ciotti has in fact decided to close the party headquarters, according to Le Parisien. All employees are ordered to leave the offices by midday: “He’s gone mad, I’m staying,” said a high-level party employee.
France: “agreement in principle” for alliance on the left
The various left-wing parties have reached an “agreement in principle” for the distribution of the candidacies of the new “popular front” in view of the next legislative elections of 30 June and 7 July. As stated in a message sent to its supporters by the Socialist Party, the constituencies were divided according to the percentages of votes achieved: France Insoumise will therefore have 229 candidates, the PS 174, the environmentalists of EELV 92 and the Communist Party 50 , we read in this message which also specifies that “the essential work on the program is always under discussion” and that there will be “no concessions on our values”. Shortly before, a representative of LFI had also announced that an agreement had been reached on the division of the constituencies.
