France and Australia have reached an agreement over the submarine dispute that broke out between the countries last year. Australia pays French company Naval Group 555 million euros in compensation for the canceled order of 12 submarines.
The cancellation of the French submarines, an order worth 31 billion euros, sparked a diplomatic row between France and Australia last year. While the order for the French submarines had already been placed, Australia struck a deal with the Americans and the British to cooperate more closely militarily. As a result, the delivery of the French submarines was no longer desired. Paris reacted furiously and even temporarily withdrew its ambassadors from Australia and the United States.
The newly appointed government in Canberra, led by Labor leader Anthony Albanese, wants to thaw relations with France again. Albanian has today announced that Australia will pay compensation of €555 million, and is talking about a “fair and equitable settlement”.
“Given the magnitude of the challenges we face locally and globally, it is essential that Australia and France rejoin our efforts to defend our shared values and interests,” the Australian Prime Minister said in a statement.
