The man was arrested around three o’clock this afternoon on the street in The Hague by the Special Interventions Service.
The Belgian police had followed the three other suspects (20, 29 and 48 years old) from Van Quickenborne’s house to the Dutch border. They also left a car at the house. According to Belgian media, an automatic rifle and bottles with petrol were found in it. Belgium has requested the surrender of the three.
According to the minister, it was a kidnapping attempt. He says so himself in a video message that appeared last night. Earlier in the day, Van Quickenborne had already reported via Facebook that the security services had intervened quickly and professionally against a threat to his address.
“It is a threat that was directed against myself as Minister of Justice and no one else. Quick action was taken and suspects were arrested. As a precaution, I will be placed under strict security for the time being and will not be able to participate in some planned activities in the coming days. It’s not pleasant, but understandable.”
