Damian Williams, federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York, and Keechant Sewell, chief commissioner of the New York Police Department, announced this Wednesday the arrest of four drug traffickers who are accused of providing the actor Michael K. Williams the drug cocktail that caused his death. The famous interpreter, known for his role as a drug thief in the television series TheWire, was found dead on September 6 at his home in Brooklyn (New York). The autopsy determined that he died from an overdose of heroin mixed with fentanyl, an opioid up to 100 times more powerful and addictive than morphine; in addition to cocaine and a fentanyl substitute. He was 54 years old and had acknowledged his fight against the demons of addiction on numerous occasions.
The head of the group is Irvin Cartagena, alias Green eyes, against which the federal court in Manhattan has instructed a case for a “narcotics conspiracy” that resulted in the death of Michael K. Williams. Cartagena was arrested this Tuesday in Puerto Rico, from where he will appear this Thursday before a federal court. The other defendants are Héctor Robles, alias Ear; louis cross, He showedand Carlos Macci, known as Carlito, 70 years old; The three were scheduled to appear this Wednesday before the federal court in Manhattan. The charges against the four stem from an investigation that began early last year into the smuggling group.
Williams, the first African-American to occupy the federal prosecutor’s office for the Southern District, did not miss the opportunity to denounce the havoc that fentanyl causes to addicts, as a fundamental ingredient of the opioid crisis that in two decades has claimed more than half a million lives in America. In a statement released by the prosecution, Williams says: “This is a public health crisis. And this has to end. Deadly opioids like fentanyl and heroin don’t care who you are or what you’ve accomplished. They just feed the addiction and lead to tragedy. The Southern District of New York and our law enforcement partners will not give up. We will put all the tools into practice. And we will continue to hold accountable the traffickers who promote this poison, exploit addiction and cause senseless deaths.”
The researchers reconstructed in detail the network of contacts between the different dealers and the drug dealers who supplied them with the substances. According to the complaint, a group called DTO began selling drugs in August 2020 on a grid of streets in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. “The DTO sells heroin laced with fentanyl and a fentanyl analog across the street and from an apartment within a residential building. On or about September 5, 2021, DTO members sold Michael K. Williams heroin that was laced with fentanyl and a fentanyl substitute [p-fluorofentanilo]Y [Irvin] Cartagena executed the transaction by hand”, as shown by the screenshots of the video surveillance cameras of the place.
Despite learning of Williams’ death as a result of an overdose of substances that had been sold to him, the four defendants “continued to sell heroin laced with fentanyl, in broad daylight, amid residential apartment buildings, in Brooklyn and Manhattan.” They face prison sentences ranging from five to 40 years. Cartagena also faces another accusation for drug trafficking resulting in death that could lead to between a minimum of 20 years and life imprisonment.
