Three women and a man die at a level crossing with barriers in a collision so violent that the train needed a kilometer to stop
A violent crash ended on Friday afternoon with the lives of four people, three women and a man, after colliding with a train and the car in which they were traveling at a level crossing with barriers located in the municipality of Novelda (Alicante) .
The place is located near the railway station of this town.
The violence of the crash was such that the convoy, which was circulating at high speed, had to travel about a kilometer before it was able to stop completely. No injuries were recorded among the occupants of the train, although the violence of the crash surprised the occupants of the train.
The events occurred around a quarter past five in the afternoon, when the emergency services were alerted that there had been an accident between a car and a train at the level crossing of the Camí de Castilla de Novelda. Specifically, it was a long-distance Intercity train that had departed from Barcelona and was heading to Lorca (Murcia), which had overwhelmed a tourism which was very affected, according to sources from the Provincial Firefighters Consortium.

A SAMU health unit and a Basic Life Service unit traveled to the site, whose medical team could only confirm the death of these four people. Two of the deceased were from Elda and the other two from Petrer. Likewise, the SVB health team assisted a woman who was traveling on the train due to an anxiety attack, although she was discharged ‘in situ’.
Some occupants of the train said they heard metal pieces pass by and a strong smell of gasoline. A noncommissioned officer, a sergeant, a corporal and six firefighters from Elda Park also traveled to the scene to release the deceased.
Subsequently, Adif, the public entity that manages the railway infrastructures, announced that it has opened an investigation to determine the causes of the accident, at the same time that it was “at the disposal of the authorities.” He also conveyed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims and thanked the emergency teams for their work.
For his part, the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, the Valencian José Luis Ábalos, in this same social network, deeply regretted the “tragic” accident and expressed “all his support and solidarity” to their families and his “gratitude to the emergency services for the work carried out ”.
For his part, the President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, also conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and took advantage of the message to ask for “great caution” when traveling.
It was planned to eliminate it
Francisco José Martínez, mayor of Novelda, in addition to regretting what happened, pointed out that, although it was not considered a black point for traffic, this level crossing was going to be eliminated because the Mediterranean railway corridor passes through this point. Its suppression was already contemplated by Adif four years ago, without so far it had been dismantled to replace it with another overpass or underground.
The cut of the tracks after the accident caused that the railway traffic was affected. Specifically, the occupants of the Intercity that was involved in the crash were taken by bus to their destination locations such as Alicante, Elche or Orihuela.
In addition, two medium-distance trains between Valencia and Cartagena and Cartagena and Valencia were affected, whose passengers also made part of the journey on the road.
Finally, the occupants of another Euromed had to make the journey between the cities of Alicante and Valencia by road.
