The curtain has risen on the penultimate round of the Formula E season on the semi indoor track in London. Under a gray sky the drivers of the electric category took part in the first free practice session and Jean-Eric Vergne won by just 4 thousandths.
The DS Techeetah driver managed to put his signature at the top of the timesheet thanks to a time of 1’21”650 but, as anticipated, the advantage over the first of his pursuers was really minimal.
Robin Frijns, in fact, had to settle for the second reference for just 4 thousandths of a second, while the leader of the championship, Sam Bird, closed with the third time and a gap of only 38 thousandths of a second from the top.
Gaps really small in the top five in the standings. Da Costa, author of the fourth time in 1’21 ” 715, paid 65 thousandths of a delay from the performance obtained by Vergne, while Mitch Evans finished with 96 thousandths of a gap from the Frenchman’s time trial.
DS Techeetah and Jaguar seem to have immediately found the right feeling with the tortuous and anachronistic British track, but Mercedes should not be underestimated. Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries managed to enter the top ten with the seventh and ninth time, but the 2019 Formula 2 champion paid a delay of 3 tenths from the top.
The performance obtained by Alex Lynn, author of the sixth fastest time in 1’21 ” 794 today, was interesting, while Pascal Wehrlein was the best Porsche driver of the day thanks to the eighth time trial.
Sergio Sette Camara failed to break down the 1’22 ‘barrier. The Brazilian closed with the reference of 1’22 ” 038 and a delay of 388 thousandths from the top, but managed to precede Edoardo Mortara by a whisker.
The Venturi rider finished with the eleventh time in 1’2 ” 045 and tomorrow he will do everything to recover the gap in the standings of 9 points that currently separates him from Bird.
Audi and Nissan in trouble. Rene Rast was unable to do better than the fifteenth time, while Lucas Di Grassi, unlucky to find traffic on his fastest lap, closed two positions behind. Rowland, on the other hand, struggled on the home track, obtaining a modest nineteenth time, while Buemi was penultimate and almost a second behind Vergne.
The Formula E drivers will be back on track tomorrow 12:00 for the first qualifying session of the weekend.
