Pascal Wehrlein took home with André Lotterer a historic double for the TAG Heuer Porsche team in Mexico City:
with a nine-second advantage over the group, he crossed the line to take the first victory for himself and the team in ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
Perfect management of the race by the Porsche team: this first saw Wehrlein yield to the assaults of the first in the standings Edoardo Mortara (ROKiT Venturi Racing) and the former Champion Jean-Eric Vergne (DS TECHEETAH), but in the meantime gain an important advantage over the rest of the group. In the final 15 minutes, therefore, the Porsche couple took advantage of the energy stored previously and passed first Vergne and then Mortara himself: since that moment, the Stuttgart team has dictated the pace of the race and energy management.
Eventually Wehrlein and Lotterer, thanks to the large advantage, they were able to enjoy the enthusiasm of tens of thousands of fans who filled the spectacular Foro Sol, avenging the agony experienced in Puebla during the past season. DS Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne held third and teammate Da Costa fourth after a series of skirmishes. Mortara did everything possible to maintain the leadership in the world championship drivers standings, obtaining fifth place after some difficulties experienced by the Venturi team in terms of energy management compared to the Porsches and DS
Reigning champion Nyck de Vries (Mercedes-EQ) finished sixth, one second ahead of Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns. Sebastien Buemi (Nissan e.dams) got a better position than Diriyah, finishing eighth and scoring points, just behind team mate Maximilian Gunther and Jake Dennis (Avalanche Andretti). Antonio Giovinazzi started nineteenth, climbing up to sixteenth position, but due to technical problems he was forced to retire
Mortara He therefore remains at the top of the drivers’ standings with five points clear of de Vries, with Wehrlein jumping to third place after winning the third race.
The fourth and fifth stages of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will be held in Rome on 9 and 10 April
The protagonists
PASCAL WEHRLEIN: “It was really exciting to win the first race here in Mexico. I am very happy to be part of this team, I love it. The car was fantastic and Andre did an incredible job. Today was our day, so this evening we celebrate. It is. It was very important to me, I have raced here a couple of times in the championship and have often been close to winning. Here in Mexico last year it was terrible to finish in P1 and then be disqualified. This weekend was a rematch and it is an incredible feeling “.
ANDRÉ LOTTERER: “Congratulations to the team and to Pascal, who got a fantastic result. I was in high spirits and had a good opportunity to take the lead, but we worked as a team and I think the strategy worked very well. If I had started in front of he would have been the same story backwards, I think from the team’s point of view it was the right decision. We played well and we had a good performance together It’s tough [non ottenere la prima vittoria all’E-Prix] but this is sport, I should have qualified better and it would have been fine. It’s nice for Pascal, a victory was taken away from him last year in Mexico; therefore, the karma has returned for him. “
JEAN-ÉRIC VERGNE: “It was an interesting race, I had more energy than Mortara and I was trying to win, but then my team asked me to change strategy and I lost a lot of positions all of a sudden. I was able to recover, but not to reach the Porsche: I am, however, very happy with this podium. It was a difficult weekend for me – I had food poisoning yesterday – and I didn’t feel very well today. Congratulations to the guys at Porsche who had an incredible race, the last time I did a 1-2 was with Andre, so well done. We keep pushing to score points in the races and get back in the race. “
