The long-time national soccer goalkeeper Almuth Schult ends her career. “A career is marked by ups and downs, and I am happy about each one of them. They have shaped and learn me. Thanks to everyone who accompanied me on the way,” said the 34-year-old ex-Wolfsburg woman in a message spread by the German Football Association (DFB).
“It was always clear to me that I would be available for the national team as long as my competitive sports career continues,” said Schult. She last played at the US Club Kansas City Current and became Olympic champion with the DFB women in 2016 and 2013. The mother of three is considered a mouthpiece of her sport and is always committed to more gender equality in football.
The goalkeeper, based in Wendland in Lower Saxony, played for Wolfsburg from 2013 to 2022 and once won the Champions League and the German Championship six times and eight times the DFB Cup. Her last of 66 international matches played Schult in the United States at the end of 2022. Schult has also made a name for itself as a TV expert at ARD since the 2021 European men’s championship.
