He faces a lesser penalty that can range from a $1,000 fine to 12 months in jail.
The main ex-advisor to Donal Trump Steve Bannon has been sentenced this Friday for two crimes of contempt of Congress. Bannon did not go to testify before the Committee investigating the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 when he was summoned, nor did he deliver the documentation they required.
It is a misdemeanor that is punishable by between an economic fine of 1,000 dollars (about 980 euros) and a prison sentence of twelve months. The jury deliberated for three hours before finding him guilty.
Beyond the conviction, the matter is relevant because Bannon is the first close Trump aide to be found guilty as a result of a major investigation into the attack on Capitol Hill. Another former Trump adviser, Peter Navarro, was also charged with contempt after defying a committee subpoena and is scheduled to go on trial in November.
Bannon, Trump’s electoral architect and adviser to the European far right, had no position in the White House when the events occurred for which he was called to testify by the bipartisan committee investigating the January 6, 2020 rebellion. But he is one one of the few who knew what was going to happen before it happened. On October 31, 2019, he told exiled Chinese tycoon Guo Wengui that the Republican leader would say he had won the election, “but that doesn’t mean he’s the winner, right?” he winked. Similarly, on the eve of the insurrection, he announced that the following day “a very, very fat” would be staged.
