Former US senator Bob Dole, a World War II veteran, died this Sunday at 98 years of age. In February of that year, the Republican announced that he had been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and would begin treatment.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Senator Robert Joseph Dole has died this morning,” said the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, an organization that supports America’s sick and wounded veterans. According to the statement, Dole “has served the United States of America faithfully for 79 years.”

Dole tried for the US presidency three times and was nominated by the Republican Party in 1996, but lost to Democrat Bill Clinton. Dole was his party’s vice presidential nominee in 1976 on a ticket headed by incumbent President Gerald Ford, but they lost to Democrat Jimmy Carter and his running mate Walter Mondale.
