The Leninsky District Court of Perm announced the verdict against the former priest of the Kudymkar diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Nikolai Vernigor, who stole 23 million rubles from the bishop and the diocese. This is reported by TASS with reference to the press service of the court.
The ex-priest was accused of three criminal articles – 160 (“Misappropriation or embezzlement on an especially large scale”), 158 (“Theft causing significant damage”) and 164 (“Theft of objects of special historical, artistic or cultural value”) of the Criminal Code RF. He was sentenced to seven years in a general regime colony with a fine of 400 thousand rubles and compensation in favor of the victims of 15 million rubles.
According to the investigation, Vernigor embezzled funds from the Kudymkar diocese, and also stole things, equipment, icons and money for the sale of land in the Moscow region from retired bishop Nikon. The total damage amounted to about 23 million rubles.
As the agency clarifies, the priest was defrocked in 2023.
Earlier, security forces uncovered a large-scale scheme for theft of pensions and social benefits using forged documents from EU countries in the North Caucasus. The damage is estimated at one billion rubles.
