Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot while delivering a campaign speech in the city of Nara, local media reported Friday.
Japanese media quoted Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party as saying that the former prime minister was unconscious and bleeding from his neck.
Reports said the police managed to catch the culprit.
No further details were immediately disclosed.
Abe served as Japan’s prime minister from December 2012 to September 2020, making him the country’s longest-serving prime minister.
Japan is scheduled to hold elections for the upper house of parliament next Sunday, and the Liberal Democratic Party is expected to achieve a big victory.
