Former cop Eric Adams has won the New York mayoral election. reported that American media in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. The victory is not a huge surprise: in progressive New York, the Republican opponent was already tens of percentage points behind in the polls.
Adams, 61, is a moderate politician and narrowly beat top official Kathryn Garcia in the primaries. Adams is the second black mayor of the largest city in the United States, after David Dinkins who was elected in 1990. The former police officer, ex-state senator and former Brooklyn borough president put safety at the top of his agenda in his campaign.
By focusing on safety in the city, Adams wants to reduce gun violence. Among other things, he wants to reintroduce the ‘stop and search policy’; a controversial policing method among Democrats because non-white citizens are arrested relatively more often.
In New York, the homicide rate increased by 30 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. That was followed by another 24 percent in the first half of 2021.
