Forest industry A record amount of logs were felled in Finland last year

According to the Natural Resources Center, the total amount of fellings increased to 76 million cubic meters last year.

Finland 65 million cubic meters of trunk wood was felled from forests last year for use by the forest industry, according to preliminary data published by the Natural Resources Center on Tuesday.

Most spruce logs were harvested as industrial wood, which was more than ever before. In addition, ten million cubic meters of trunk wood was harvested for energy, so the total amount of fellings increased to 76 million cubic meters, according to the Natural Resources Center.

Forest products good sales and increased demand for wood were reflected in the timber trade market fellings last year.

The felling of industrial wood increased by seven million cubic meters, or 12 per cent from the previous year. The number was 4% higher than the average felling in the previous five-year period.

“The felling volume of spruce logs in particular was exceptionally high, 16.3 million cubic meters. For the first time, more spruce logs were cut than pine wood. 16 million cubic meters of pine fiber were felled, ”says the Senior Actuary of the Natural Resources Center Tiina Sauvula-Seppälä in the bulletin.

Even a spruce log the felling volume was 26 per cent higher than in the previous year and 15 per cent higher than the average of the previous five years. A record 12.9 million cubic meters of pine logs were also felled. The increase in felling volumes came mainly from private forests.

According to the Natural Resources Center, the amount of pulpwood felled did not increase as much as that of logs. 35.1 million cubic meters of pulpwood were felled. The number increased by five per cent year-on-year, but fell short of the average of the previous five years by four per cent. The felling of spruce pulpwood increased by nine per cent from the previous year.
