The forest and wine entrepreneur Job from Nell combines enjoyment and sustainability. The protection of the soil is a field of ideas for new business models. After all, you get so much in return if you treat the floor with care.
Riesling and truffle. Sounds delicious. An enjoyable evening with friends or on vacation. One could still dream of a great view. But Job von Nell draws attention to Earth. Enthusiastic about humus and microorganisms, about the many functions of the soil ecosystem. “We get so much back when we treat the floor with care. That is the basic requirement for high-quality products” – such as noble Riesling plants or truffles. Job von Nell was a project developer for corporate real estate. Ground counted too. But of course very different. “You walk on it and don’t think about life in the ground.” In times of climate change, CO2-Lower the new highs. “Overall, I have a very happy professional life,” says the 65-year-old in an interview with the FAZ. “But the happiest time began with the decision to go into agriculture and forestry.” He used to have – very successfully – the market niche of so-called light-industrial real estate developed, former industrial yards or storage buildings. Today he is thinking about “how to increase the chances of forest and vineyard economic goods”.
Von Nell is the managing director of the VDP winery Karl Schaefer in Bad Dürkheim, which he runs together with his wife Nana. On 18 hectares of vineyards, including an impressive number of first and large sites, the couple cultivates top-class Rieslings. Almost 100 kilometers further, in the Hunsrück, is his forestry business, that of Nell’sche Forstverwaltung: Around 750 hectares of forest are managed there in a natural way. “But the importance of the forest will lie less and less in the marketing of wood and game,” says von Nell. “We need the forest to store nutrients and water, to protect the climate and biodiversity and for our own well-being.” Von Nell has wind turbines in the forest. It works “super well” and it hasn’t harmed biodiversity.
