Most doors of houses in the Netherlands are less than a meter wide. Getting a real car inside to convert into a simulator is quite a challenge. And then there are the little things like ‘lack of space’. If you want to know what you are missing, you can go to Alkmaar now. There is now the Fordzilla P1, a concept car that has been converted into a racing simulator.
How the Ford P1 came about is also a special story. Ford’s design department made a series of sketches of certain elements and followers on the social media platforms were allowed to choose the best option. For example, whether it should be a single-seater or a two-seater and whether the rear wheels should be covered or open. What the followers chose, happened.
Out of that process came the Ford P1, which was “just a cool concept car” at the time. At the 2021 Gamescon, the folks at Ford decided that the P1 would be converted into a simulator. For this, a Fanatec Podium steering wheel and pedals were built in the car. Now the car under the name Fordzilla P1 goes to various locations so that gamers can take a seat behind the wheel.
The Fordzilla P1 simulator is now in Alkmaar
The simulator is currently in Alkmaar and you can take a ride. At least if you’re fast enough. You can crawl behind a normal simulator at Racesquare. There is a race every 20 minutes and the fastest participant gets to climb into P1. Small side note: if you are taller than 1.80 meters, then the Fordzilla is a bit tight. At 1.92 meters we really had to fold ourselves in the car.
The orange color is not a wrap
Before the Fordzilla came to the Netherlands, the car underwent a minor makeover. The car is not wrapped, but really sprayed in this shiny orange color. That turned out to be quite a challenge, because it is a difficult process of spraying the paint on it and then heating it immediately. It’s not quite perfect yet and as soon as the car leaves the Netherlands, they will give it another try.
The purpose of the orange mirror is to make it look like the car is really straight out of a video game. In games, extra emphasis is often placed on reflections of the paintwork. It’s hard to grasp the idea so stationary, but when you see the Fordzilla moving, you immediately understand what they had in mind.
