Attention, riddle: What do chess and petanca have in common? Apart from the debate that often provokes both modalities about their sporting condition, from the neighboring Gallic country now comes a new coincidence that, inevitably, evokes the scandal starring a month ago by Magnus Carlsen (34 years), world number 1 on the board of 64 escapes.
If on December 27 the great Norwegian teacher left the World and lightning chess championship (Blitz) that was held in New York because the International Federation (FIDE) prohibited participating by wearing jeans, identical order must comply in France since January 1, 2025 Petanca players.
The French Federation of Petanca and Provencal Games It has introduced a rule in the regulations according to which in the official regional and national tournaments of a character it is prohibited to compete in jeans or dress pants.
The new guideline specifies that to launch the balls, players must carry the pertinent sports uniform. This regulatory modification has a clear objective: that the Petanca is perceived as a sport in itself and not as a simple leisure activity.
It is not something trivial in a country where the Petanca has More than three million practitioners. In fact, since 2015 it is forbidden to play with the naked torso, with a t -shirt and even with bermuda or shorts that are not specifically sports.
The French Federation imposed this reform a decade ago to change the image of the Petanca and give it that more sporty character with the ultimate goal of including it in the Olympic program. At the moment, they did not get it in Paris 2024 nor will it be in the Los Angeles Games 2028.
In Spain, the Petanca Federation has just turned 45. More than 200,000 people practice this sport and exist 20,000 federative licenses distributed among the more than 600 clubs. As more surprising and hopeful fact for this modality, 35% of all these licenses correspond to young people under 18. Athletes between 18 and 55 represent another 35% and the remaining 30% belong to the category of veterans.
