No new wind farms are being built on the Veluwe for the time being. That has the province of Gelderland decided on Tuesday. New wind turbines have too great a negative impact on the vulnerable nature, writes the province. The decision was taken in particular to protect the rare honey buzzard, a buzzard-like bird of prey. Whether wind farms are allowed in the area of eight kilometers around the nature reserve is still being investigated.
The flying and breeding honey buzzard in the Veluwe enjoys the highest protection status in Europe. According to the provincial government, the risk of these birds flying against the rotor blades is too great. That would not only be bad news for the species itself. Changes in populations of birds of prey such as the honey buzzard can have major consequences for the entire nature reserve.
It is a temporary decision. If nature in the Veluwe recovers and technical solutions are developed that prevent birds from flying into the blades, new wind farms may be on the horizon again. For example, black-painted rotor blades could prevent birds from flying into them. An experiment is currently underway with a camera detection system that should be able to detect honey buzzards.
