Accused of occupying the highest position in the criminal hierarchy, Russian Stepan Furman has been extradited from Portugal to Moscow. This was reported press center Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia on Wednesday, February 23.
“Accompanied by employees of the NCB Interpol of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia and the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, Russian citizen Stepan Furman was extradited from Portugal. For the first time in history, a European country has extradited to Russia a person accused of occupying the highest position in the criminal hierarchy,” the department noted.
According to the press center, the case under Art. 210.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Occupation of the highest position in the criminal hierarchy) was initiated in 2019. Furman, who was repeatedly tried for various crimes, was put on the international wanted list through Interpol channels based on a request from the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Murmansk region.
According to investigators, since 1994, Furman, having received the criminal status of a thief in law, occupied the highest position in the criminal hierarchy. In its composition, the members of the group committed grave and especially grave crimes in the region, added to the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation.
At the same time, the Oktyabrsky District Court of Murmansk chose in absentia a measure of restraint against him in the form of detention.
Earlier, in January, Germany extradited to the Russian Federation the ex-adviser to the head of Dagestan, Osman Makhachev, accused of taking a bribe, and two more defendants in criminal cases. According to available information, in 2017, for a multi-million dollar bribe, he assisted the bribe giver in the appointment of the head of one of the municipalities of the republic.
