With the approximation of President Jair Bolsonaro to the Progressive Party, exponent of the Centrão and which can host him to run for reelection in 2022, and the practice of the so-called “secret budget”, revealed by the state, former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva assessed that Bolsonaro marks the denial of his electoral speech, when he claimed to be someone outside the old politics.
“He was an old man, speaking ill of the old policy and saying that he would build the new policy”, commented the PT in an interview with Afternoon Radio, from Bahia, this Wednesday (20). The secret budget consists of the distribution of funds without transparency to ensure political support for the Bolsonaro government. The practice, revealed by the state in May, it became possible after the creation of the rapporteur’s amendments, or RP9, by Congress, at the end of 2019. “They government are practicing the most horrendous old policy with the greatest shamelessness,” criticized the former president.
Despite considerations to the current government, Lula admitted that he is optimistic about the new social benefit proposal, which provides for the payment of R$ 400 per month to beneficiaries in 2022. For him, even if the proposal has an electoral tone, it is up to the population to evaluate the profit that the Chief Executive wants to take from the initiative. “I can see Bolsonaro saying now that he is going to give R$400 in aid. There are people saying that it is electoral aid, which we cannot accept. I don’t think so. PT has defended an aid of R$600 since last year. The people need it. He has to give. If he’s going to take advantage of that, that’s his problem.”
In Lula’s view, his governments proved that “poor is not a problem”, but rather the “solution”. “When poor people are participating in the Budget cake, in the recipe created by society, this citizen becomes a consumer, becomes a first-class citizen, forms a step in the social scale, can participate in the dynamism of the country’s economy”, he defended.
However, even highlighting the government’s recent move on the social issue, Lula commented that Brazil is being governed by the Economy Minister, Paulo Guedes, who, according to the former head of the Executive, does not meet the established goals.
With an eye on 2022, with guaranteed leadership in the electoral polls, Lula reinforced the call for the elections not to be prioritized, since there is a period of one year before they take place. At the time, the PT member stressed that “Brazil’s social problems” must be resolved.
Re-establishing the promise made to his electorate, the former president stated that, only at the beginning of next year, he should define his candidacy and then start traveling around Brazil. However, Lula said that, regardless of any circumstance, he will campaign next year, whether as a candidate, electoral corporal or voter.
