The president of the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban), Isaac Sidney, reiterated this Wednesday, 2, that the banking sector defends that instant payment methods, such as PIX, be temporarily suspended for the payment of online betting games. He also admitted that one possibility would be to impose some kind of limit on the use of these means until the regulation of the betting sector is completed.
“One of the ways, instead of prohibiting the use of instant means such as PIX to pay for bets, is to limit, impose limits, per transaction. This already happens today. For example, at night, from 8pm until 6am. But, again, the focus here is not on a specific payment instrument. The focus is to find ways to avoid a deterioration in the level of family debt”, he said after meeting with the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, in Brasília. He defended that a “cleaning brake” be implemented until there is a definitive regulation of betting.
The president reiterated that Brazil is experiencing the best moment in the post-pandemic credit market and, therefore, should not “open any flank so that family debt is compromised”. “We came across alarming data from the Central Bank that clearly shows that family budgets have been used to pay for bets,” he said. He reinforced that no one had the exact dimension of the exponential growth in bets.
Sidney further explained that the meeting with the minister did not serve to define an action plan. He acknowledged that it is up to the government to take the necessary measures to control gambling. Febraban is even considering asking the government to create a task force to deepen the impacts of bets, he said.
“It is important to have an accurate diagnosis (about bets); This task force could, in addition to the Ministry of Finance, include other government bodies that take care of consumer protection, that take care of the prevention of money laundering, that also take care of social benefits for, for example, Bolsa Família beneficiaries” , he assessed.
