Because of the war, the match in Wales is of particular importance to the Ukrainians. The venue brings light to people’s lives.

Midfielder of the Ukrainian national team Taras Stepanenko said Guardianillethat the first qualifying match against Scotland had been tense to the front.

When Stepanenko looked at the phone after the game, one of the many messages had come from a friend of his who is currently fighting in the army against Russia.

The soldiers had found in their hands a screen from which they had been able to watch the match. After the Scottish Callum McGregor had scored a goal where the ball just crossed the goal line, worries about the war were forgotten for a moment.

The soldier’s anger had turned to that of a football fan.

“The guy said the soldiers at the border had thought the ball didn’t cross the finish line,” Stepanenko told the Guardian.
