Football|Riga FC, coached by Valakari, is fighting for the Latvian championship.
Soccer coach Simo Valakari currently works in Latvia as the head coach of Riga FC, but the man is being taken to a new address very quickly.
Valakari is in the Scottish media promoted as the number one candidate for the new head coach of St. Johnstone, which plays in the country’s premier league.
St. Johnstone have started the season badly and after seven rounds they have only four points, which entitles them to the third last place. So Craig Levein got the shoe about a week ago.
St. Johnstone is said to have already chosen Tiernan Lynch as a pilot, but Lynch’s wage demand had finally been too much for the Scottish club.
Valakar was asked about the Scottish news on Sunday, when Riga beat FK Liepaja 1–0. Valakari hesitated for a while with his answer, but finally answered the question about the accuracy of the information.
“They have asked the club for permission to talk to me, and the club has granted it. I haven’t talked to them yet about respect for my players and this match,” Valakari answered.
Scotland is a familiar place for Valakari, as he played more than a hundred matches in his career in Motherwell during three seasons. Riga FC, led by him, is currently second in the Latvian premier league.
Valakari, who ventured out into the world from Helsinki, also played in England and the United States during his career. In his coaching career, he has won the Finnish championship at the helm of SJK in 2015. From 2023, Valakari has coached in Latvia.
