Football Mexican league match ends in huge crowd fight – criminal gangs believed to infiltrate football stands

A spectator fight took place in Querétaro, Mexico, last Saturday, injuring 26 people and arresting 17.

In Mexico the match of the local football league Liga MX ended a week ago in chaos. The match between Querétaro and Atlas had to be suspended about an hour after the game when a huge mass battle broke out among the crowd.

Fans of the home team of Querétaro chased down supporters who were left behind with their weapons, including pew benches and advertising fences. Videos spread on social media about, among other things, how people lying bloody in the country were kicked.

Players and the public are trying to escape through the player tunnel, among other things. Some of the players on the home team stayed there and tried to end the violence.

According to the AFP news agency, 26 people were injured in the massacre, but authorities said no one died as a result of the violence. Police arrested 17 people in the wake of the incident.

Mexico is set to host the World Cup of Football in 2026 along with the United States and Canada. Fifa, the International Football Association, described the spectator violence in Querétaro as “intolerable and unacceptable”.

According to AFP, in addition to spectator violence, the future host will be plagued by, among other things, homophobic shouts and songs from the public and the infiltration of criminal gangs (“Barra”).

Players and supporters escaped the violence in the auditorium, among other things, through the player tunnel. Querétaro’s goalkeeper Washington Aguerre tried to calm the situation.

Experts interviewed by AFP believe that cartel members were also involved in the Querétaro case.

“Usually when two barraa are hostile and stand against each other, it’s like any street fight. What happened in Querétaro was more violent and had the characteristics of drug trafficking, ”said a professor at UNAM University. Hugo Sánchez Gudiño described to AFP.

“When organized criminal groups fight, they sometimes take off their enemies’ clothes, which happened in Saturday’s mass fight, ”he said.

Mexico has been plagued by drug-related violence since 2006, when the country’s government involved troops in the war on drugs. More than 340,000 people have since been murdered in Mexico.
