Football|Joel Pohjanpalo was one of Venezia’s key players when the club was promoted to the main league.
Finnish players Joel Pohjanpalon and Jesse Joronen represented by Venezia celebrated their promotion to Serie A, Italy’s top football league, on Sunday.
In the two-part final of the relegation games, Venezia beat Cremonense 1–0 on aggregate.
In the final matches, goalkeeper Joronen was his team’s number one star after keeping a clean sheet in both matches. However, Pohjanpalo stole the biggest headlines throughout the season.
Huhkaji’s striker won Italy’s second-highest Serie B top-scoring title after hitting 22 goals in 37 matches.
Although Pohjanpalo remained scoreless in the relegation games, he was a celebrated hero in the locker room after promotion was secured.
Serie B shared a video on the messaging service X, where teammates rhythmically chant a support song praising Pohjanpalo.
Surrounded by his wildly celebrating teammates, the Finnish striker guzzles a drink – apparently beer – looking a little embarrassed. In Finnish style, Pohjanpalo took the situation calmly, until finally joining the vents.
In the video, Pohjanpalo is wearing a Corno Ducale headdress, the kind worn by the rulers of Venice (doges) until 1797. Pohjanpalo has been nicknamed “Il Doge” in Italy.
Pohjanpalo said the hat was a gift from a fan, local media Venice Today wrote using the Sky interview as a source.
In the same interview, Pohjanpalo said that he drinks “whatever” at the party and compared the heist party to Finland. The beer tasted right after the game.
“It’s very German or Finnish that the fans invade the field, but everyone has done well so far, Pohjanpalo told Sky, according to the Venetian media.
Bottom fire has been selected for the Finnish national team for the friendly matches at the beginning of June. Huuhkajat will face Portugal and Scotland on Tuesday and Friday, who are preparing for the European Championships.
Pohjanpalo’s contract with Venezia lasts until the summer of 2027, so he will play in Serie A next season.
