“Please go kickboxing.” Minister Barbara Visser (Infrastructure) has that message for rioting football supporters. “Find a sport and enjoy yourself, but don’t do it there,” said the minister in WNL on Sunday. “You’re ruining it for so many people.” The VVD politician emphasizes that there are also children in the stadium who are trying to enjoy a match.
Earlier this weekend it was announced that the so-called Regiegroep Football and Security, which includes the KNVB, mayors, police and justice, will meet on Monday for emergency consultations. Mayor of Breda Paul Depla, who joins the working group on behalf of the mayors of the host cities, says: ,,Unfortunately, this is not the first incident this year involving violence in and around the stadiums. That is why there will be an extra meeting with the management group on Monday to discuss the situation and to see what steps need to be taken. Because the fact that this violence has to stop is clear as a matter of course.”
Outgoing Justice Minister Ferd Grapperhaus already spoke on Saturday about ‘violent criminal behaviour’. He spoke with the mayor of Maastricht Penn and the police. “This has nothing to do with football. The police and the Public Prosecution Service are doing everything they can to give rioters a close call.” He announced that he would quickly enter into a discussion with the KNVB about the riots of recent weeks.
Experts are concerned about the rise in football violence. While one thinks it is a corona effect because fans have to get used to how they should behave in the stadium, the other thinks there is increasing social unrest and we have yet to get the worst.
