Football ESPN: NFL New York Jets owner, former ambassador Woody Johnson is interested in buying Premier League club Chelsea

Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich has said he is selling the London club.

American owner of the New York Jets, who play in the NFL Robert “Woody” Johnson is interested in buying football in the English Premier League, Chelsea, the sports media ESPN says.

According to ESPN sources, Johnson has discussed the matter with Raine Group, a commercial bank.

Johnson, 74, is well acquainted with both Chelsea and the Premier League, as he lived in London while serving as U.S. ambassador to the UK from 2017-2021.

Johnson’s interest is also boosted by the fact that the Jets sai in December, access to the so-called British home market area along with five other NFL clubs.

Johnson has owned the Jets since 2000.

Chelsean current owner, Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich announced the sale of Chelsea in early March. Abramovich’s relationship with the club became more complicated after Russia invaded Ukraine.

The oligarch has promised to set up a charity to donate the proceeds of the trade to the victims of the Ukrainian war.

Johnson would not be the first NFL club owner in the Premier League. Stan Kroenke owns Los Angeles Rams and Arsenal, Shad Khan Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham and Glazer family Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Manchester United.

In addition, the owner of the San Francisco 49ers Jed in York are shares of Leeds United.
