Mead lifted the ball over the Austrian goalkeeper by Manuela Zinsberger in the 16th minute of the match. The goal, verified on video, was scored by a few centimeters when the Austrian defense didn’t quite manage to clear the ball before it crossed the goal line.

The opening half was spent in England’s control, but no further goals were seen. In the second half, Austria’s best equalizing opportunities came with long shots, but the shots up to the goal were not enough.

England and Austria play in Group A, whose other two teams are Norway and Northern Ireland, who will face each other on Thursday. The best two from each group will advance.

Finland plays in Group B and starts its tournament on Friday against Spain.
