Football Chelsea stiffened in the last few meters in the frost of St. Petersburg

In overtime, the Zenit pushed the reigning champion of the Champions League away from the block top. Juventus wedged past to the group victory

Football Chelsea, the reigning champion of the men’s Champions League, took second place in the H-Group at the last minute as the Londoners were left in the 3rd-3rd draw in St. Petersburg on Wednesday night as a guest of Zenit.

Chelsea was at the top of the group before the final round and was still in the winning streak on Wednesday.

Chelsea got a dream start for the match in St. Petersburg. Timo Werner tortured the Londoners into a 1-0 lead from the corner kick after the game had just been in the second minute.

However, as the opening period progressed, Chelsea froze in St. Petersburg’s 14-degree frost. 38. minutes of play Claudinho leveled the game and three minutes later Sardar Azmoun raced through the Zenit 2-1 lead.

Chelsea got a tie an hour after the game when Werner released their top pair Romelu Lukakun goal scoring. Lukaku just manages to reach the ball first.

Juventus defeated Malmö in Turin 1-0, so Chelsea had to win in St. Petersburg to win the block.

After 85 minutes of play, the free-spirited Werner decided to go for goal as he struck the ball from the corner of the pitch. Overtime Zenitin Magomed Ozdoev fired a 3–3 draw and pushed Chelsea into second place.

Chelsea and Juventus progressed from Group H to follow-up games. Zenit’s games will continue in the spring in the Europa League.

Malmö, who cut off the Helsinki Football Club’s road in the Champions League qualifiers in the summer, remained a block jumbo. Malmö’s balance from the block phase was one draw point and a rough goal difference of 1–14.

Malmön Niklas Moisander played the whole match in Turin. In the group stage, Moisander was allowed to play the full minutes in the last two matches. The total number of game minutes was accumulated in three group stage matches.
