The petition was sent to the chairman of Uefa and published on the website of the German Viola von Cramon-Taubadel on Wednesday.
Set MEPs are urging the European Football Association (UEFA) to take away the rights to host the May Champions League final from Russia.
“We urge you to stop using St. Petersburg and other Russian cities as venues for international football events and to choose, as a first and very urgent step, an alternative venue for the Champions League final,” Alexander Ceferin the addressed letter says.
The final of the Champions League is scheduled for May 28 in St. Petersburg.
The petition was published on Wednesday by a German MEP Viola von Cramon-Taubadelin website. It has been signed by 60 MEPs, including Ville Niinistö (green).
In the letter, MEPs say they are very concerned about the global political situation. The situation has been exacerbated by the Russian president Vladimir Putin the threat of war in Ukraine, exacerbated by its provocations.
Mepit also made a number of other claims to Uefa. They want the organization to stop cooperating with its Russian gas giant sponsor, Gazprom, and are considering appropriate sanctions for Russians who violate international agreements.
“Considering the development of the situation, the time for continuous and close monitoring of the situation is clearly over. Uefa must act now and cannot continue to provide a showcase and thus legitimacy for this system, ”MEPs demanded.
The demand refers to Uefa’s statement on Tuesday, in which the organization said it would monitor the situation continuously and closely and take any decisions if necessary.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson demanded as early as Tuesday the transfer of the Champions League final away from St. Petersburg.
“It is inconceivable that major international football events could be held in Russia after its invasion,” Johnson told Reuters.
