Due to a malfunction, the elevator suddenly reversed at high speed, causing great panic: occupants jumped hastily from the seats to avoid colliding with other benches. Miraculously, only one was injured.
According to Korea Joong Ang Daily The chairlift at the Bears Town Ski Resort in Pocheon, Gyeonggi-do Province, suddenly stopped around 3 p.m. last Friday, after which it deteriorated at a high speed. Passengers approaching the base station saw the benches coming down slam together hard.
Panic
Many skiers panicked, opened security and tried to jump out of the lift. In doing so, they sometimes landed on other passengers who were already on the ground, or had to stay low to the ground to avoid being hit by another bank of skiers arriving below.
Others also just stayed in the chairlift. They were repeatedly hit hard by benches that came down and crashed into them.
Apologies and compensation
Only a 7-year-old boy had to be taken to hospital. He was injured jumping out of the elevator. No one else was seriously injured, the resort said. After the lift was shut down, more than a hundred skiers had to be freed from the seats.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the incident. The ski station has set up a hotline where victims and other victims can report injuries and damage to their ski equipment. Nothing is known yet about a possible compensation, but the resort has already offered ‘sincere apologies’.
