In recent months, Florida legislators and Governor Ron DeSantis have been passing various laws. One of them is the HB 179, which is related to towing companies. Learn the details below so you can defend your rights.
Through this bill, which will go into effect July 1, the state intends to address the bad practices by towing operators. Florida legislators have found that some companies carry out abusive practices that affect citizensfor example, charging high rates, so a series of measures will be implemented in favor of consumer rights.
In accordance with what the official text establishes, The legislation includes the following points:
- Counties that have established maximum towing rates They must publish these costs on their official website.
- Companies that operate storage after towing a car They must submit their costs within the next five days after the moment in which they have stored a vehicle. Previously, the period was seven days.
- Older models of vehicles that are not claimed They can be sold after 35 days of being stored by a trailer operator. For newer models, the period is 57 days.
- Towing operators must accept documents such as a title, electronic or paper, lease or lender agreement, so that a person proves ownership of the vehicle.
- Towing companies will be required to allow inspection and release of a vehicle one hour after that the owner, or insurance representative, present the documents during business hours where the car is stored.
- Towing companies must accept the payment of accrued charges through at least two of the following options: cash, cashier’s check, money order, traveler’s check; bank, debit or credit card; mobile payment service, digital wallet or other electronic payment system.
Laws that will go into effect in Florida starting July 1
The governor of Florida has approved various laws that will become valid as of July 1. Until this week, 144 projects had already been approved, these are some of them:
- HB 49. It removes some of the restrictions on work standards for 16- and 17-year-olds, such as how many hours per day and week they can work.
- HB 59. Homeowner associations will be required to provide a physical or digital document of their rules and agreements to all their members.
- HB 159. Licensed pharmacists will be able to perform HIV testing and provide the results.
- HB 275. New crimes are considered that involve critical infrastructure, that is, those who damage, access or alter no-entry signs, roads, power plants and other types of stations will obtain both civil and criminal sanctions.
- HB 583. This law will allow wine bottles to be sold in larger sizes. Until now the law prevented containers from being larger than one gallon, but now there will be exceptions.
