State Governor Ron DeSantis has decided to end special statute that allows Disney to act as local government
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed this Friday (April 22, 2022) a law that ends Disney’s self-government in the city of Orlando, where the company has amusement parks.
The governor’s decision comes after Disney, through executive director Bob Chapek, criticized the education law passed by DeSantis that bans the teaching of sex education and gender identity in elementary schools.
The law enabling Disney’s special status in the region allows the company to collect taxes and provide essential public services. The statute was created to facilitate the construction of the park in Orlando.
According to the network NBCthe governor called “provocation” Chapek’s speech. The withdrawal of the statute is expected to take effect in June 2023.
