Florida is among seven states affected by a listeriosis outbreak which has so far left 11 people sick, 10 hospitalized and 1 dead, according to health authorities. The investigation is ongoing as of November 20, 2023.
The outbreak is linked to contamination of whole peaches, nectarines and plums distributed by HMC Farms.. Florida and California reported three cases each, while Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio and Michigan have one reported case each.
These products were sold in stores throughout the country between May 1 and November 15, 2022 and 2023, under the brands “HMC Farms” and “Signature Farms“with a label”6359“. They were also sold as individual fruits with a label bearing “USA-EU” and a specific number for each type of fruit.
The Department of Health urges consumers not to consume any of these products and to check their homes, including refrigerators and freezers, for the presence of these fruits. If you have any, it is advisable to discard them or return them to the store.
Besides, It is recommended to thoroughly clean the refrigerator and utensils that have been in contact with these products.since listeria can survive and spread easily.

How to recognize a listeriosis infection
Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches and fatigue. Pregnant people may experience pregnancy loss, premature birth, or life-threatening infection in the newborn. Those over 65 years of age or with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of hospitalization and, in extreme cases, death.
It is essential that those who have consumed affected products and are experiencing symptoms such as fever, fatigue and muscle aches, contact a healthcare provider immediately. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that Listeria is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illnesses in the United States.
The situation is being closely monitored, and the public is urged to stay informed about research updates and take necessary measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Companies that market or serve products related to this alert should refrain from doing so and follow FDA recommendations for the safe handling and cleaning of such products.
