Recently, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis supported various laws that legislated issues related to the LGBTQ+ community. In that context,, A federal judge just struck down legislation that was passed in 2023 on treatments for transgender people.
Judge Robert Hinkle reversed a state law that eliminated gender-affirming care for minors and restricted treatment to adults.
In the judge’s opinion, governor went too far by banning transgender minors from being prescribed puberty blockers and hormonal treatments if they have their parents’ permission.
Likewise, the legislation approved in 2023 established that transgender adults could only receive treatment from a doctor and not from a registered nurse or other qualified health professional. Access to online treatments was also prohibited. The which is why Hinkle decided to overturn those rules is that, according to their analysis, transgender people have a constitutional right to legitimate treatment.
He even cited the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and compared those who oppose such procedures to those who were once against equality. “Some transgender opponents invoke religion to support their position. Just as they once invoked religion to support their racism or misogyny,” the judge wrote in his decision to which the media had access News Channel 8. He went on to say that while everyone is free to stand up for their beliefs, they cannot discriminate against others, in this case specifically transgender people.
From the decision, Transgender people reacted satisfied with the decisionstating that the law was only intended to attack their rights and expel them from the state, since in reality it did not have a medical basis.
The media quoted one of the mothers of a minor who is receiving hormonal treatment. “This ruling means that I will not have to watch my daughter suffer unnecessarily.” because I can’t give you the care you need.
