21 Mexican players have played in the NWSL, the United States women’s league, throughout its history. Of those 21, some have retired and others went to Europe or even to the Liga MX Femenil. And only three have continued to play in that tournament.
Who are they? We present them to you!
Sabrina, born in Livingston, New Jersey to a Mexican father, plays for NJ / NY Gotham FC as a defender. His career began at the collegiate level when he played for Notre Dame and even played in Europe for a year with Sevilla. In the United States he has played for LA Galaxy OC, Sky Blue FC and his current team. Curious fact: his twin sister, Mónica Flores, plays for the Rayadas de Monterrey.
One of the best known Mexican Americans thanks to her time in the Mexican national team and her career in the NWSL. The forward currently plays with the Chicago Red Stars, and previously at Sky Blue FC and Seattle Reign. His career began with the USC Trojans at the collegiate level and he has played for the tricolor 23 times and scored eight goals. Curious fact: it was in the orbit of the Rayadas, but the times were not given.
One of Mónica Vergara’s undisputed and fresh out of Texas A&M Aggies. After a brief stint at Eibar, he has had little participation in his current team, OL Reign. He has been part of the national team since the U-15 and we hope he can have more participation in a top league like the United States. It’s a bullet down the left wing! Curious fact: the only Mexican-born player currently playing in the NWSL.
Let’s hope that some of the stars of Liga MX Femenil can make the leap to the neighboring country and put women’s soccer on high!
