The floods that affected western Canada left at least four dead and one missing, announced this Saturday (20) local authorities, which have restricted access to fuel in the affected regions.
Torrential rains that fell in southwestern British Columbia province last Sunday and Monday led to landslides and flooding, which destroyed roads and infrastructure.
The Trans Mountain pipeline, crucial to Alberta’s oil industry, was temporarily closed.
The Royal Gendarmerie (GRC, federal police) confirmed on Saturday that three men reported missing since Monday were found lifeless near Lake Duffy.
“We are continuing our search to find a fourth man, but weather conditions and the state of the areas make the task difficult,” explained Sgt. Janelle Shoihet, in a statement from the GRC.
These three deaths bring to four deaths due to flooding. A woman’s lifeless body had been found near a landslide that took up much of a highway near Lillooet, 250 kilometers from Vancouver.
This road axis, which connects Vancouver to isolated regions in the north of the province, was reopened on Saturday for “only essential” traffic, the British Columbia authorities announced in a statement.
On Friday, the authorities imposed a maximum of 30 liters of fuel per load on private drivers, in order to alleviate the damage to the supply networks caused by the extreme weather event.
The measure could be in effect for “10 days,” said British Columbia Public Security Minister Mike Farnworth, who urged his fellow citizens to limit travel to save gas.
In Abbotsford, partly flooded and where the Army deployed, farms were supplied by helicopters. Four tons of food were sent on Saturday by air to a pig farm, officials said.
Meanwhile, heavy rains are forecast in the region next week.
This region of the Canadian Pacific coast has suffered repeated natural disasters in just a few months: an episode of intense heat at the end of July left more than 500 dead, as well as forest fires, which destroyed a village as a result of global warming, according to experts.
