Since November, heavy rain in Brazil has repeatedly caused landslides and floods. Now people had to be brought to safety by helicopter.
Ilhéus – After long, heavy rain, around 60 places in the Brazilian state of Bahia were under water, according to the governor.
Two dams broke at the weekend, as the administrations of the affected communities in the east of the country announced. On social media, they called on residents around the dams to get to safety. People would be rescued with helicopters and boats, wrote the governor of Bahia, Rui Costa, on Twitter. “At the moment, the priority is to save lives.”
For weeks Bahia has been suffering from storms that led to floods and landslides. The Brazilian media reported, citing the civil defense of Bahia, that 18 people have been killed and almost 20,000 people have been made homeless since November. In a dam disaster in Brumadinho, Brazil, at least 260 people were killed by a mudslide in early 2019. dpa
