In three months, as much rain as usual in a whole year – the region around the Australian metropolis Sydney is once again struggling with flooding.
Sydney – Australia* suffers particularly from climate change. Extreme weather* situations make this clear again and again. A month ago, there were devastating floods in Sydney and large parts of the states of New South Wales and Queensland. Now the people in the region are once again struggling with the water masses. Meteorologists said on Thursday (April 7th) that in just three months the tourist metropolis of Sydney had as much precipitation as it normally does in a whole year.
Australia: Floods in Sydney area – one dead
As with the floods about a month ago, there are now fatalities again. At least one person has died in recent Sydney floods. The man’s body was discovered in his vehicle, which had sunk in the water masses, in Cobbity, southwest of the Australian metropolis. This was reported by the AAP news agency on Friday.
Authorities meanwhile issued further evacuation orders for thousands of people, including in the north-western suburbs of Cattai and Pitt Town and in the south-western neighborhoods of Camden and Chipping Norton. As of Friday morning alone, evacuation orders had been issued for about 2,400 citizens, New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet said. Evacuation warnings were issued for 17,000 other residents. Thousands of people had already been brought to safety on Thursday in the course of the ongoing heavy rain. More than 150 schools in the region remained closed.
Australia: Rainfall to ease over the weekend – no all-clear
“It will stop raining, it will eventually get better,” Regional Minister for Emergency Services Steph Cooke said. “We just have to get through this one day at a time.” According to the meteorological authority, the extreme precipitation* should decrease over the weekend.
However, the positive weather forecast does not mean the all-clear: “Although the rain is easing, there are major flood warnings for some places,” said Jane Golding from the weather office to the news portal ABC News. Many rivers continue to threaten to overflow their banks. (ph with dpa) *Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
