Annie and Stuart Pike get a little lost on the road that connects their hometown of Bunde with Maastricht. A white handbag is the only thing Annie carries with her. Her husband Stuart only has a Nike gym bag.
Suddenly this Friday afternoon they get the message that they have to leave their house. In the dyke that protects Bunde against the water of the Julianakanaal, a waterway that separates from the Maas at Maastricht, a hole is created just before 2 p.m. Initially, the authorities are calling on residents to flee to the top floor of their house. Five minutes later, the advice changes: several thousand residents of Bunde, Geulle, Voulwames and Brommelen must leave their homes as quickly as possible.
