The objective of the visit is to revitalize interparliamentary relations and address the key issues of the strategic alliance between Mexico and the European Union
Five MEPs, from three political groups of the EP, will be in Mexico City from Thursday 28 to Saturday 30 October, with the aim of revitalizing inter-parliamentary relations and addressing the key issues of the strategic alliance between Mexico and the European Union.
Massimiliano Smeriglio (S&D, Italy), co-chair of the Mexico-EU Joint Parliamentary Commission and head of the delegation, said: “I am very happy to be able to go to Mexico City and meet with our counterpart, even if it is a small delegation from MEPs. Among the five MEPs who will travel are three Spaniards: Javi López, Jordi Cañas and Leopoldo López Gil.
Restoring relationships in person is essential after the difficult times we have been through. In a digitized world, the continuity of our work has been, fortunately, ensured by distance relationships. However, the mission will be a good opportunity to consolidate our ties through conversations and face-to-face meetings, which remain irreplaceable.
It is important that we meet again after the visit to Brussels of the delegation of Mexican parliamentarians for the JPC in February 2020. On that occasion, we had the opportunity to discuss in depth on key issues: the political, economic and social situation of Mexico and the EU; gender equality and the fight against violence against women and girls; the exchange of good practices on environmental protection measures. All of them are issues that we want to take up.
We also hope to hear and know the point of view of the different Mexican institutions on the ratification of the Global Agreement. A renewal that would make the existing agreement the most modern the EU has concluded to date. This agreement consists of a comprehensive cooperation that includes commercial issues; economic; social; political and cultural; as well as the protection of human rights and the defense of democracy and the rule of law. Common values that have always united and kept Mexico and the EU Member States close ”.
